Roots of hip-hop were explored
May 21, 2008 “Over 5,000 students (learned) about the history of hip-hop during our Rainbow Dance Theatre educational programs which (took) place in Santa Cruz County schools from May 12-19,” said Young Audiences Program Director Jeannie Perez.
About them
Rainbow Dance Theatre’s ensemble transforms the stage into a world of mystery, sorrow and humor, she said. The ensemble was directed by Valerie Bergman and Darryl Thomas and was founded in Honolulu in 1991. It has been based in Monmouth, Ore., since 1998 and has toured the world.
“The Rainbow Dance Theatre ensemble (took) Santa Cruz County students on a cultural odyssey which traces today’s popular dance style hip-hop to its roots in African dance and drumming”, said Young Audiences Executive Director Connie Hutzel.
Community
A community event, organized by Manos Gallery, was held at La Entrada de Tubac on Friday, May 16, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Doors opened at 5 p.m.
