7% of Korean Adults Diabetic
August 19, 2008 A survey finds that seven out of every 100 Korean adults are diabetic.
According to a survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention and Ajou University Hospital, the number of diabetics has
more than doubled since the late 1980s.
Starting in their 40s, people were found to have an increased risk of
contracting the disease. Eighteen percent of all diabetics were found
to be in their 60s, the highest percentage for any age group. One out
of five men in their 50s and one in five women in their 60s were found
to be diabetic.
Risk factors increasing the odds of contracting the disease include
abdominal obesity, an increase in age, hereditary factors and stress.
The disease is also more prevalent in men than in women.
A person with a diabetic family member is two-point-six times more likely to develop the disease.
