Daegu to host international musical festival
June 4, 2008 DAEGU, June 2 (Yonhap) — The southeastern city of Daegu is to host an international musical festival this month, organizers said on Monday.
혻 혻 The Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF) is to be held from June 17 to July 7 in main theaters and provisional stages around downtown Daegu, and is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Daegu city officials said.
혻혻 The event was founded in 2006 as the only international musical festival in South Korea, and is aimed at developing musical theater into an industry, officials said.
혻 혻 “The city of Daegu seeks to establish itself as the mecca of the Asian musical industry, to be envied by other international musical markets such as Broadway and West End,” Kang Shin Seong-il, an actor and chair of the Board of Directors for the DIMF, said to reporters on Monday.
혻혻 The festival is to present six official invitational musicals and three DIMF grantee homegrown musicals, as well as side events including a Fringe Festival and academic conferences. It will also provide opportunities for college students to show off their talent, city officials said.
혻혻 The opening performance, “Eurobeat,” based on the disco music genre from 1980s Europe, will be featured on June 18 at the Daegu Opera House, they said.
