Gov’t to Ask US to Renegotiate Beef Deal
June 3, 2008
The government says it’ll ask the U.S. not to export beef from cattle older than 30 months.
Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-chun announced the plan in an emergency news conference Tuesday. He said new sanitary rules for U.S. beef imports will not be published in the government gazette until Washington replies.
The government announced Monday evening it would delay publication, which had been slated for the next day.
The agriculture minister said that with the delay, quarantine inspections of U.S. beef under storage in Korea will also remain suspended.
Chung said that both for national interest and public health, the government is seeking to resolve the beef controversy without damaging the trust of an ally. He promised to secure quarantine rights to ease public concerns over U.S. beef safety.
The government aims to start renegotiating a beef agreement with the U.S. on Tuesday.
