The government and ruling party will revise a newspaper law to include Internet portals’ news service as an official part of the media.

Grand National Party lawmaker Na Kyung-won said the government and the party decided to revise a law guaranteeing the freedom and functions of newspapers at a recent meeting.

The revision seeks to define Internet portals’ news services as online newspapers and hold them legally accountable if their reports are proved wrong. If passed, those who have suffered from false online news reports will be able to file a complaint with the Press Arbitration Commission.

The government and the party plan to have the revision passed at a regular parliamentary session in September.
