Koreans Stressed Over Marriage Money
April 20, 2008 Not their own marriages, though — their friends’ and coworkers’.
Ahead of the springtime wedding season, a survey has found that men and women in their 20s and 30s are feeling the burden of paying congratulatory money.
On the 15th the marriage information agency 가연 announced the results of its nation-wide telephone survey of 372 unmarried adults (180 men, 192 women), conducted from the 4th through the 13th, on the culture of congratulatory money. The survey found that 74% of respondents, or 275 people, said they feel it is a burden for them.
During the spring wedding season they go to two or three weddings a month, which is burdensome for them, and it is not easy to decide how much to give.
55% said they give from 30,000 to 50,000 won per wedding, 41% give up to 30,000, and 4% give at least 50,000.
58% choose how much to give based on “friendship and how close we are,” 23% choose based on “how much others are giving,” and 19% choose according to “how much I can afford.”
