July 10, 2008
Rival camps have agreed to open a plenary session Thursday to elect a new speaker and deliberate on the formation of six special parliamentary committees.
The deputy floor leaders of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) and the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) met for discussions late Wednesday, and agreed on details for the opening of the first session of the 18th National Assembly.
According to their agreement, all special parliamentary committees will begin operations on Monday. The special committee charged with investigating the beef imports deal with the U.S. will operate until August 20th, while four committees, including one on stabilizing people’s livelihood and managing animal epidemics, will engage in activities until August 14th.
The rival camps agreed that the special committee on investigating the beef issue will probe officials from the presidential office, the agriculture ministry and the foreign ministry.
