‘Num. of Summer Vacationers to Decrease’
July 10, 2008
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has projected that the number of vacationers will decrease this summer for the first time in six years.
The ministry said they expect over 105 million individual trips to be made during the popular vacationing period from July 19th to August 17th. This figure is down some seven-tenths of a percentage point compared to the same period last year.
This summer will be the first to record a decrease since the government began an annual survey on vacationers in 2002.
The survey found almost 77 percent of travelers will drive to vacationing spots while others will use buses, railways and flights.
In particular, in the week from August 3rd to 9th, over 35 percent of people with vacation plans will hit the roads. Also, another 33 percent will travel in the week prior, from July 27th to August 2nd. Thus, the major highways are expected be quite congested during the two-week period.
