Wonder Girls Nearly Cause Deaths by Stampede

A recent Wonder Girls concert caused a stampede which ended with hospitalizations and angry concertgoers calling it fortunate that there were no deaths.

Tragedy was narrowly averted when a surging crowd was tightly pressed in at a performance by the popular group Wonder Girls at Seoul National University.

On the 16th the police and university announced that as soon as the Wonder Girls took the stage at approximately 8:30 PM on the 15th as part of a spring festival, a crowd of people surged forward to see them, pinning down people in front and injuring some of them. Some of them had to be moved to hospital in ambulances prepared by the festival’s organizers.

According to the organizers, over 2,500 people came to watch but staff were not properly arranged and could not prevent the injuries. A personwho worked for the university in preparing the festival said, “some 50 to 60 students and volunteers were arranged in front of the stage, but it wasn’t enough. I couldn’t hear that people had been injured.”

After the performance many comments were left at the school’s website criticizing the organizers for insufficient preparation. One student who wrote using a pseudonym described the frightening scene. “a lot of people, especially women were pushed and shoved and fell down. There were lots of screams of ‘help me’ and things like that. I was pressed in too and had to go down to one knee, but I was thinking that I was going to die.” Another person who wrote using the name ‘wagtail’ (할미새) criticized the organizers for being lazy and unprepared, saying, “it was really dangerous. People could have died. And actually lots of people were hurt.”
