Cop suspect in killing of two elections officials is missing

MANILA, Philippines - The suspect in the killing of Commission on Elections law department chief Alioden Dalaig and the official’s successor, Wynne Asdala, has been reported missing.

GMA News’ Weekend Report said early Monday that Police Officer 1 Basser Ampatuan was nowhere to be found after he went inside the men’s room of Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila.

Ampatuan was detained at the office of camp commander Senior Supt. Co Yee M. Co, Jr. after he was arrested last April.

Philippine National Police Director Avelino Razon has denied that Ampatuan had escaped, although he admitted that the suspect cannot be found at the camp.

Razon has ordered the National Capitan Region Police Office to explain the disappearance of Ampatuan.

Co, meanwhile, is investigating officers guarding Ampatuan.

Ampatuan, 36, is a member of the Shariff Kabunsuan Provincial Police Office in Sultan Kudarat, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. He has been fingered as the triggerman in the killing of Dalaig and was linked to the killing of Asdala.

On April 14, 2008, Ampatuan was asked to report to the provincial director who ordered the accused not to leave the premises.

On April 15, Ampatuan was brought to the General Santos City Airport. Escorted by two policemen, the accused boarded a plane bound for Manila. They landed on Manila Domestic Airport and was subsequently turned over to Manila police.

He was then presented to media for the killings of two Comelec officials.

Dalaig was gunned down outside a casino hotel at the corner of Pedro Gil and M.H. del Pilar streets, Malate, Manila on November 10, 2007 at 6:45 p.m.

Ampatuan was positively identified by three witnesses as the triggerman in Dalaig’s slaying last year.

He is also being linked to Asdala’s killing near the Comelec office in Intramuros last March.

The police said the slayings were politically-motivated. - GMANews.TV
