Filipino teachers may soon find themselves teaching English to students in South Korea.
The possibility of Korea opening its market to Filipino English teachers arose after Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Luiz Cruz recently met with Commissioner Choo Kyu-ho of the Korea Immigration Office.
Cruz discussed with Commissioner Choo the possibility of Filipino teachers gaining entry into South Korea as English teachers.
South Korean law currently allows only professionals from “native” English-speaking countries such as the United States and Canada to teach the language.
However, Choo said that South Korea is “considering extending the scope” of the law.
He said South Korea’s public schools are in need of more English teachers. With its highly-qualified workforce, the Philippines can help South Korea meet this demand.
