Cops raid tabloid warehouse in Makati
July 2, 2008 The Philippine National Police (PNP) raided a tabloid warehouse in Makati City for allegedly publishing obscene articles. “We conducted a surveillance on the group for a long time,” Senior Superintendent Renato Angara of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said. The CIDG said that it caught the group printing the tabloids Toro and Sagad. Four personnel inside the warehouse were nabbed by the authorities and the printing equipment were seized . Rep. Bienvenido Abante, chair of the House Committee on Information, said that the raid was a success considering that Congress is currently pushing for a bill that will strengthen the campaign against pornography. “In a proposed bill, pornography is defined clearly, that’s why it is easier for authorities to run after those who promote pornography,” Abante said. The suspects claimed they do not know who owns the warehouse. The owner of the compound said that the place was just being leased, and he was not aware that the tenant was engaged in an illegal activity.
