Fisherman missing in Iloilo sea accident

MANILA, Philippines — A fisherman was reported missing after a cargo vessel rammed into the boat that he and three others were riding off the coast of Baliguian Island in Iloilo on Wednesday.

Online news site Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) reported on Thursday that John Piñon, 22, of Daan Banwa, Victorias City in Negros Occidental, was still missing as of 8 p.m.

Coast Guard operatives were still conducting search-and-rescue operations in the area, Iloilo PCG commander Eduardo Fabricante said.

Piñon, Elberto Boro, Norberto Tiam, and Alberto Demegillo, were on the fishing boat Karlyn 3 that was anchored near Baliguian when the cargo vessel Teofila bound for Cebu crashed into it, said the report.

Fabricante noted that the fishermen did not have a light and were anchored directly in the navigational path of the cargo ship. He said the Karlyn 3 broke into pieces.

Boro, Tiam, and Demegillo managed to swim ashore but Piñon remained unaccounted for.

The Coast Guard also alerted coastal communities about the incident. - GMANews.TV
