Weisz wins sexiest vote in lesbian poll

Actress Rachel Weisz has topped a poll of Hollywood’s sexiest women, voted by lesbians.

The Mummy actress – who is engaged to Requiem For A Dream director Darren Aronofsky – took the number one spot in the Women We’d Love To Love poll of 4,000 gay women.

A spokesman is quoted by Britain’s The Sun newspaper as saying: “From her woman in peril in the first two Mummy movies to her Academy Award winning turn in The Constant Gardener, Rachel Weisz is one gorgeous English gal with a whole lot of range.”

Rachel, 36, beat off competition from actress Nicole Kidman, who took second place.

Voters said it was the 41-year-old’s stockings and suspenders in the hit musical movie Moulin Rouge that turned them on.

Academy Award-nominated actress Minnie Driver took third place.

The top 10 list comprises solely of British and Australian actresses.

It includes Rachel Weisz, Nicole Kidman, Minnie Driver, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Keira Knightley, Thandie Newton, Emily Blunt, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Cate Blanchett.

Referendum plan wins little support as Thai crisis drags

BANGKOK - Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej found little support Friday for his proposal to hold a referendum to resolve the stalemate with protesters who have occupied his offices for 11 days.

The protesters stormed into his Government House compound on August 26 demanding that Samak resign and that Thailand’s democracy be curtailed, saying only 30 percent of seats in parliament should be elected.

YANGON, Myanmar - The political party of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi urged Myanmar’s military government Friday to ensure her well-being as she continued to refuse food deliveries to protest her detention.

The National League for Democracy “expressed concern” that Suu Kyi has not accepted food delivered to her home for almost three weeks, the party said in a statement.

Malaysia deploys 3 navy vessels to Gulf of Aden

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia is dispatching three navy vessels to the Gulf of Aden to protect its merchant ships following a sharp surge in pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia, an official said Friday.

The frigates, carrying an unspecified number of soldiers and several helicopters, will provide security for five ships owned by Malaysian shipping line MISC Berhad, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying by The Star.
