14 still missing from 3 sunken vessels in Babuyan Islands
August 26, 2008 Authorities
are still hoping to find survivors of three passenger-cargo vessels
that capsized off Camiguin Island, part of the Babuyan group of islands
in Cagayan province in northern Philippines, during typhoon Karen’s
onslaught on August 20. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) already located M/V
Perpetual and M/V St. Joseph, but the third vessel, M/V AAA has not
been found. Since Friday, the PCG and local rescuers have been
scouring the waters of Camiguin and Calayan islands looking for signs
of life. Three crew members from M/V Perpetual were able to
swim ashore after their boat capsized, but a total of 14 crew members
from the three vessels remain missing. M/V Perpetual Help capsized while it was docked at a
wharf in barangay Balatubat in Calayan town, Cagayan. The passenger
ferry was carrying three crewmembers—Nelson and Alfredo Bumagat and
Gilbert Manalo—all residents of Naguillan town in La Union. Police said they had received a silimar report that
M/V St. Joseph capsized Wednesday off the coast of Barangay Balatubat
with its owner, Ernie Payas, and his four crewmembers onboard. The M/V St. Joseph’s crew were identified as Dexter
Calapin, Dennis Garalde, Christopher Irece, and Teofilo Cadiy. Police
said the vessel was loaded with bags of copra and iron scrap to be
shipped to the town of Naguillan, La Union province. — With a report from Harris Julio, ABS-CBN News Isabela
