McCain's Pro-Abortion Veep?

ccording to the Politico, McCain is going to announce his Veep pick on August 29th,

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) plans to celebrate his 72nd birthday on Aug. 29 by naming his running mate at a huge rally in the battleground state of Ohio, Republican sources said.

That’s a week from Friday, and the day after his rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, accepts the Democratic nomination at a 70,000-person spectacular in a Denver stadium.

…Sources close to McCain say he has wrestled with the choice, torn between a high-stakes, high-reward pick like Ridge or Connecticut Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman — the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000 — or a safer and more conventional selection such as Romney or Pawlenty.

There are 3 questions you have to ask about those three men.

#1) Does a McCain/Romney ticket carry Michigan?
#2) Does a McCain/Pawlenty ticket carry Minnesota?
#3) Does a McCain/Lieberman ticket bring in enough moderates to replace the conservatives it will alienate?

Questions about Obama's Chances Begin

David Gergen, of all people, notes one of the outcomes from Saddleback which have to have the Obama campaign concerned:

Heading into the candidates’ appearances on Saturday night at Saddleback Church, the conventional wisdom in politics was Barack Obama should have a clear upper hand in any joint appearance with John McCain — one the young, eloquent, cool, charismatic dude who can charm birds from the trees, the other the meandering, sometimes bumbling, old fellow who can barely distinguish Sunnis from Shiias.

Well, kiss that myth goodbye.

Now some will pass it off to a rusty Obama. But that had nothing to do with McCain’s performance which proved, as Gergen points out, he “is no old fuddy-duddy who isn’t sure where he is going”.

Obama in front of a teleprompter delivering a practiced speech is, indeed awesome. Obama freelancing is less impressive. And I believe that the Obama campaign has realized that, leading to their decision to nix townhall meetings with McCain (at which, btw, McCain excels).

Obama Calls Pro-Lifers Liars

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is harshly accusing a pro-life group of “lying” about his record on abortion as a Illinois state senator, despite compelling evidence on the pro-lifers’ side.

Obama made the aggressive attack when Christian Broadcasting Network Senior National Correspondent David Brody asked Obama about documentation the National Right to Life Committee recently obtained of a 2003 committee vote on “born alive” legislation that would have required medical officials to give life-saving care to babies who survived abortion.

Obama has said again and again he voted against versions of that bill as an Illinois state senator because it did not include language to protect Roe v. Wade, as the federal version did which sailed through the U.S. Senate 98-0. The committee report, however, shows a 10-0 vote in favor of an amendment to add the same language to protect abortion rights that was added to the federal bill. That same committee report subsequently shows Obama voting the kill the bill in a “final action” vote.

Do We Need To Know Why People Are Gay?

So, I’m reading this very good, thorough article by Neil Swidey of the Boston Globe about what makes a person gay. It cites the limited research that has been done (mostly on men, lesbianism is less studied) and concludes that no one knows for sure why, but it looks like genetics and uterine environment play a part in creating homosexuality.

This is a tricky subject. In fact, it pains me to even write about it. I have gay friends who I love very much. I don’t want them harassed or hurt. I remember two boys from High School who were clearly homosexual and they weren’t persecuted, thankfully. It was bad enough to see their relative social isolation. I have had friends who have made themselves sick by staying in the closet.

Conversely, I know men who have selfishly gotten married, because they wanted the legitimacy of heterosexual marriage and/or wanted children, and have given their wives STDs or left their women feeling like they were defected because of non-interest. These angry fellas eventually came out, but blazed a destructive path along the way.

It has been my experience that there is very little that can be done about who a person is attracted to. I know two very religious men who struggle with this whole deal. They feel the homosexual act is morally wrong, but I suspect that neither one is winning the war of the flesh. Maybe I’m wrong. I don’t know.

Ellen Degenerate Does Her Part

In today’s entertainment news, actress Ellen DeGeneres has taken advantage of the insanity in California to get married, sort of, to another woman. USA Today’s account is surreal:

Add another celebrity wedding to the books for summer 2008.

Ellen DeGeneres married longtime actress girlfriend Portia de Rossi at their home Saturday night in Los Angeles.

The newlyweds wore ensembles by Zac Posen and traded rings by Neil Lane, People.com reports. De Rossi, 35, had on a backless, light pink dress and her hair pulled up loosely, and DeGeneres, 50, wore white pants, a button-up shirt and a vest, reports Usmagazine.com. […]

Do the couple want children?

“It depends when you ask us,” de Rossi told USA TODAY in November. “A few months ago, we were thinking about it. I wouldn’t want to say never, but at this point, it’s not something I think we’re going to do.”

Did I mention that Degenerate and her “actress girlfriend” are both members of the same sex?

Texas Gov. Rick Perry OK with teachers, staff carrying guns at schools

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry said Monday that he supported the Harrold school district policy to allow teachers and staff members to carry guns at school as long as they are adequately trained in gun safety.

“I’m pretty much a fan that if you’ve been trained and you are registered, then you should be able to carry a weapon. Matter of fact, there’s a lot of instances that would have saved a lot of lives,” Mr. Perry said.

Democratic Platform is Bad for Men

Glenn Sacks and Mike McCormick: DNC Platform: Bad News for Dads:

If the Democratic Party is interested in garnering men’s votes, one certainly would not know it from their platform. The Democratic National Committee’s “Renewing America’s Promise” is bad news for American fathers.

The platform’s “Fatherhood” plank puts all blame for father absence squarely on men, and promises to “crack down” on fathers who are behind on their child support. It also promises to ratchet up draconian domestic violence laws which often victimize innocent men and separate them from their children….

Fathers’ ties to their children are more tenuous than at any time in American history. Child support and domestic violence policies have helped drive a wedge between fathers and their children. Sadly, the Democratic Party has committed itself to policies which will make the problem worse.

Conservatives Slam Obama’s Answer About Supreme Court Justices at Saddleback Forum

A former law clerk for Clarence Thomas is leading the pack of critics saying Barack Obama’s comments about the Supreme Court justice reveal the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s ignorance and misunderstanding of the Constitution.

The weekend event at the 22,000-member Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., was meant to give both candidates a chance to address questions of importance to the large evangelical community. Church Pastor Rick Warren, known for his bestselling book “The Purpose-Driven Life,” posed the series of questions to each candidate, which were aimed at getting to their personalities, foibles and leadership styles.

During the symposium, Obama said he would not have nominated Thomas to the bench because “I don’t think that he was a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time for that elevation. Setting aside the fact that I profoundly disagree with his interpretation of a lot of the Constitution.”

China Confiscates Bibles From American Christians

BEIJING —  A group of American Christians who had more than 300 Bibles confiscated by Chinese officials when they arrived in China is refusing to leave the airport until they get the books back, their leader said Monday.

Pat Klein said he and three others from his Vision Beyond Borders group spent Sunday night at the airport in the southwestern city of Kunming after customs officers took the Bibles from their checked luggage.

“I heard that there’s freedom of religion in China, so why is there a problem for us to bring Bibles?” said Klein, whose Sheridan, Wyoming-based group distributes Bibles and Christian teaching materials around the world.

The Bibles were printed in Chinese, he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The move comes as China hosts the Olympics in Beijing, where false media reports last year claimed Bibles would be banned from the games. The state-run China Daily reported last month that 10,000 bilingual copies of the Bible would be distributed in the Olympic Village, which houses athletes and media.

In China, Bibles are legally printed at just one plant — the world’s largest — run by a communist government-backed Christian association, and are available in many bookstores. But the officially atheistic government prohibits proselytizing and is worried that if the spread of religion goes unchecked, believers might ultimately challenge the Communist Party’s authority.

Lawyer in Edwards Scandal Bankrolled Texas Dems

WASHINGTON —  The Dallas lawyer who helped John Edwards’ former mistress move across the country has donated $3.5 million since 2005 to help fuel a Democratic resurgence in Texas, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Fred Baron has been by far the largest donor to a group called the Texas Democratic Trust, and Republicans are now taking aim at candidates who take money connected to him.

Baron, who is Edwards’ longtime chief fundraiser, has helped Democrats rebound from near-obscurity in the Texas House to within striking distance of winning a majority of seats this fall. Baron started the Texas Democratic Trust and gave it $1.9 million in 2005 and 2006, providing more than 80 percent of its funding, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

“Without Fred Baron, none of this would have happened,” Democratic consultant Jason Stanford told the newspaper. “He paid for it. He paid for the work that was absolutely necessary.”

Baron was thrust into the national spotlight after acknowledging that he quietly began sending money to Rielle Hunter, Edwards’ mistress, to resettle in California. Baron has said he did not tell Edwards that he helped Hunter, nor how much money he gave her.

Bush tells Russia to get out of Georgia

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush warned Russia on Saturday against trying to pry loose two separatist regions in Georgia and said Moscow must end military operations in the West-leaning democracy that once was part of the Soviet empire.

Bush told reporters at his Texas ranch that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s signing of a cease-fire plan with Georgia was “a hopeful step.” But Russia’s vision of Georgia without the provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was a nonstarter, the president said.

“These regions are a part of Georgia and the international community has repeatedly made clear that they will remain so,” said Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at his side. “There’s no room for debate on this matter.”

The long-simmering dispute over those breakaway areas turned to war this month after Georgia launched a massive barrage to try to take control of South Ossetia. The Russian army quickly overwhelmed the Georgian forces and drove deep into its neighbor.

Russia’s attack has caused serious strains in relations with the West and heightened fears in the young democracies of Eastern Europe.

AP Shreds Corsi, Pretends Obama Didn't Attend 'Radical Black Church'

Associated Press aggressively took after Jerome Corsi’s book The Obama Nation in a story touting the Obama camp’s attempts at rebuttal. Reporter Nedra Pickler repeated the Obama camp’s dismissal of Corsi as a “fringe bigot” and declared “The book is a compilation of all the innuendo and false rumors against Obama.” Pickler insisted it was somehow a false rumor or an innuendo that Obama “attended a radical black church.” Among her complaints about the book’s accuracy: “He accuses Obama of wanting to weaken the military even though Obama’s campaign calls for adding 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines.” She lamented that “Corsi catalogs various allegations that have haunted Obama on right-wing blogs and anonymous e-mails” and openly mocked the conservative World Net Daily website: “Corsi writes for World Net Daily, a conservative Web site whose lead headline Thursday was ‘Astonishing photo claims: Dead Bigfoot stored on ice.’”

This Is A Repeat Of The 1980 Election

Since history always repeats itself, there have been a lot of people trying to figure out which election we’re repeating this time around.

Is it Lincoln vs. McClellan? Wilkie vs. FDR? Bush vs. Dukakis?

I’d say it’s Reagan vs. Carter.

Now, that’s not to say Obama is another Reagan. To the contrary, Reagan was de facto leader of the conservative movement in America when he ran for President while Obama is an insufferable lightweight, a mere empty suit. However politically, the situation is very similar.

In 1980, the American people were sick to death of Jimmy Carter. However, the election turned into a referendum on Ronald Reagan. Was he ready to lead? Could he be trusted in the White House? Was he just an actor with a great personality or was he the real deal?

In this election, the American people are sick to death of George Bush and the Republican Party. However, the election has turned into a referendum on Barack Obama. Does he have the experience to lead? Can he be trusted to deal with a crisis at 3 AM in the White House? Is he the real deal or he just a young, good looking “celebrity?”

Ultimately, Reagan’s two terms as governor of California, his years on the road talking about conservative issues, and his substantive approach to the issues of the day convinced the American people that they could trust him in the White House and they happily kicked Jimmy Carter to the curb for him.

Of course, again it goes without saying that Obama is no Reagan, McCain is no Jimmy Carter, and the country is much more divided today than it was in 1980. Still, in the end, who ends up the in the White House is going to revolve around one key issue: is Barack Obama ready to lead? The conclusion most people come to on that question will probably determine who the next President of United States is going to be.

Colin Powell TO Endorse Obama

It has been hard to escape the fact that the Left has completely given up on the idea of a color blind America. The Democratic Party openly advocates discriminating against white Americans via Affirmative Action and black Democrats were voting for Barack Obama at a 90% clip by the end of the Democratic primaries based on his race.

Now, the word out is that Colin Powell is going to endorse Barack Obama. It hasn’t happened yet and perhaps it won’t, but if it does, why would it happen?

What are the chances that someone like Colin Powell would endorse, let’s say, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton? Zero, right? So, why would a prominent Republican like Colin Powell, who was a major player in the Bush Administration, endorse Barack Obama? Despite what he may say, there would be one reason for it and one reason only: because he’s black and he wants to support a black candidate.

When we get to a point where even Republicans are saying race is more important than ideology, I fear for the future of this country and wonder if we’re headed down the road towards the sort of tribalism that ruined so many countries around the world.

CNN Concerned Anti-Obama Book 'Might Catch on With Some Voters'

Never Again!  Not the Holocaust.  We’re talking about the MSM’s determination not to let Barack Obama be “Swiftboated.” In successive segments today, CNN provided a perfect example of the phenomenon. First, a one-sided trashing of Obama Nation, the anti-Barack book by Jerome Corsi, who co-authored Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry.  In the succeeding segment, anchor Suzanne Malveaux worried out loud to Paul Begala that Barack Obama might not be responding fast enough to attacks against him, thereby “falling into the same trap as John Kerry.”

Introducing the first segment, Situation Room anchor Malveaux didn’t hesitate to make unequivocal claims as to the Corsi book’s inaccuracy.

SUZANNE MALVEAUX: There’s a new book out about Barack Obama, and it is not flattering. The facts are mixed with accusations about Obama that are misleading or just flat-out wrong. Yet despite all of this, there is concern that author’s claims might catch on with some voters.  Our CNN’s Jessica Yellin joining me now, and Jessica, the author even admits that there is an agenda here behind this book.

Don Siegelman to Speak at Democratic Convention

Did you know that Idaho Senator Larry Craig is going to speak at the Republican convention? Okay, I’m just kidding but can you imagine the reaction from the media if that were the case? We would hear never ending stories about the “culture of corruption” inherent in the Republican party. Well, guess what? Former Alabama governor Don Siegelman who was convicted on bribery and mail fraud charges, is going to be a speaker at the Democratic convention in Denver according to this report from WHNT TV in Huntsville, Alabama. And if you want to know what the media reaction will be to this, we already have a sneak preview of biased reporting in the WHNT story announcing Siegelman’s convention appearance (emphasis mine):

Don Siegelman will speak at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Siegelman tells NewsChannel 19 he has accepted an invitation extended by the Colorado delegation.

Gunman fatally shoots Ark. Dem. Party chairman

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A man barged into the Arkansas Democratic headquarters and opened fire Wednesday, fatally shooting the state party chairman before speeding off in his pickup. Police later shot and killed the suspect after a 30-mile chase.

Police said they don’t know the motive for the 51-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released. However, they said moments after the shooting, he pointed a handgun at the building manager at the nearby the Arkansas Baptist headquarters. He told the manager “I lost my job,” said Dan Jordan, a Baptist convention official.

Chairman Bill Gwatney died four hour after the shooting. The 48-year-old former state senator had been planning to travel to the Democratic National Convention later this month as a Hillary Clinton superdelegate.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, issued a statement calling Gwatney “not only a strong chairman of Arkansas’ Democratic Party, but he is also a cherished friend and confidante.”

Witnesses said the gunman entered the party offices shortly before noon and said he wanted to see Gwatney.
