Lucas: 'Star Wars' is not sci-fi
August 13, 2008 The franchise creator said science has little connection with the universe he invented for the films.
He is quoted as saying: “We look at it as a different dimension. The laws of physics are different here. Star Wars is not science fiction at all. It’s much more attuned to mythology, to psychology, to history than it is to science.
“It’s more of a parable about the way we are, rather than the way we’re going to be. That’s why it starts out as a fairytale - a long time ago in a galaxy far away - once upon a time.
“It deals with princesses. It’s purposely designed not to be about where we’re going. It’s about where we’ve been and what we can learn from the past in the present.”

Cameron talks about his 3-D sci-fi epic
August 7, 2008 In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron said, “You have to make a good film that would be a good film under any circumstances. … You have to put the narrative first. The reality is no matter how many (3-D) screens we get, you are still going to have a large number of people — possibly the majority of people — who see the film in a 2-D environment.”
The trade says that Cameron expects the final film — which he shot using the Fusion 3-D camera system — to be roughly “60% CG animation, based on characters created using a newly developed performance capture-based process, and 40% live action, with a lot of VFX in the imagery.”
Avatar, starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, opens Dec. 18, 2009.

Laurence Fishburne is prime "CSI" suspect
August 6, 2008 The search for a new lead has been shrouded in secrecy, but sources say Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn’t previously acted on any homicidal impulses.
Fishburne, an Oscar nominee for “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” had been mentioned as one of the “CSI” producers’ top choices for the role, along with John Malkovich and Kurt Russell.
Will Martian water discovery fuel interest in sci-fi Blue Mars world?
August 5, 2008 The discovery of water on Mars might spur a lot of interest in the science fiction dream of terraforming the Red Planet into a habitable place. That could be good for Avatar Reality, a virtual world company in Honolulu that is building “Blue Mars,” a 3-D world with ambitious graphics and a setting that takes place after the successful colonization of Mars.
It is the brainchild of Kazuo Hashimoto, chief executive officer, and his cofounder Li-Han Chen, vice president of development. It is being bankrolled so far by Henk Rogers, the video game pioneer who discovered Tetris and brought it to the West.
Their virtual world has some of the prettiest graphics I’ve ever seen and is one of the most ambitious in the works; but, then, they’re used to big bets. Their last collaboration was on the “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” movie, a $137 million computer-animated film that was an artistic tour de forcewhen it debuted in 2001 but bombed in the market.
